City Year Participants are FREDS!

A few weeks ago I posted a call to action for HR professionals to become more involved with shaping our youth for the future. Since that time I had the pleasure of spending an evening with about 30 volunteers from City Year. City Year unites youth to commit to volunteering in the community. Recently,  my daughter invited several of her City Year co-workers to our home to a get together. As the group arrived every one of them greeted my husband and me with a handshake and a sincere thank you for inviting them to our home. I took the time to get to know some of these young people and I learned they really are extraordinary, polite, compassionate and above all, humble.  In a time where their peers are enjoying the last few weeks of summer on the beach or on a lake this group gets up at 6 am to start working in the community and doing their best to make the city of Manchester a better place for kids!

HR Professionals, if you come across a resume of a former City Year participant, I encourage you to take a second look. I can attest first hand this group of youths are future FREDS!

Why do you work in HR?

I recently spoke with a group of college students taking an HR class at the local university about the challenges and changes in HR.  During the class the subject came up of choosing a career in HR.  I shared my story how I “fell” into HR.  I would like to hear from you.

Why did you decide to work in HR?

HR addressing the manager’s behavior!

Recently a friend who works in HR, asked me what I thought of the situation outlined below. I would like to hear from other HR Professionals what your thoughts and advice are.

I have worked with a co-manager for over three years named “Bill”. During our work together Bill has always been very cooperative, fair to his employees, engaging and I have always found him a pleasure to work with. More recently, Bill has become less engaged, he  has experienced periods away from work  and when I try to talk with him he has become withdrawn.  His employees ask me what is going on with Bill constantly.  His recent change has impacted his work and his supervisor has asked me to address this.  I know Bill has some personal problems and have tried in the past to help him, but now he just won’t communicate. How do I get Bill back on track?

Workforce Readiness and HR!

As an HR Professional I find the next generation is ill prepared to enter the workforce. As a volunteer with the Manchester Area Human Resources Association, I often speak with students about workforce readiness issues. I discuss the basics of the job search process , job searching, resume writing, cover letters, interviewing do’s and don’ts and etc. Every time I speak to a group of students I am amazed by the responses of appreciation for taking the time to help them understand the basics. While it is meaningful that they find these programs valuable,  it is also disturbing that they are necessary. This generation is the next to work in our organizations, which, is an incentive to help. I would like to hear from you and your thoughts on this subject of workforce readiness. What skills are you finding are lacking in the upcoming workforce and what ideas do you have to help groups such as MAHRA help the next generation prepare.

Freds with Nystagmus

This week’s Fred story comes from Philadelphia PA which is where the non-profit organization named the American Nystagmus Network’s (ANN) board of Directors met for their bi-annual retreat. Nystagmus is a rare eye condition that results in visual impairments and in some cases significantly poor vision that is defined as legally blind. ANN was incorporated in 1999 to help provide education, counseling and support for people living with nystagmus.  What makes this group Fred like is the fact that this board is comprised of all volunteers who give tirelessly to helping individuals and families affected by nystagmus.  When the board is not working to develop new programs such as scholarships, grants and educational programs, it is busy planning top notch conferences to help affected people meet others living with nystagmus and gain knowledge to improve their quality of life. This board gives generously of both of time and resources to sustain the work of ANN. It would be easy for these people to say they don’t have the time or resources to help.  Their dedication to  helping makes them extraordinary.    I serve as its president and could not be more proud to serve alongside all these Fred like volunteers!

In HR we get caught up in the busy day to day world we work in, however, true Fred-like HR leaders stretch themselves and find a way to give back to the community.  Giving back can be something as simple as serving as a mentor for a disadvantage youth, serving on a board or volunteering for a non-profit.  I want to hear your Fred-like experiences in giving back!
